SERENGETI NATIONAL
PARK
The Serengeti National Park with
14763KM is one of the
largest wildlife sancturaries in the world and it is the site of one of the most
breathtaking events in the animal kingdom. The
migration of thousands of wildebeest It
was accepted by the world Heritage convention as a World Heritage Site and
Biosphere Reserve. The park's
name Serengeti, means "endless plains" and is derived from the
maasai language. The park was gazetted in 1951 and it is about 320 km from
Arusha town. Serengeti National
Park has about 35 species of plan animals, from a hare to the elephant and a wonderful
selection of birdlife. Survey
estimates indicates an animals population of about A million including over 300
lions, 1,600,000 wildbeast, 500,000 zebras.
There are over, 400 birds species. Visitor
services in the park include four lodges, 6 tented camps and a variety of
campsites.
NGORONGORO CRATER;
The first view takes your breath away, Ngorongoro is a huge Caldera or
collapsed volcano, 250km and 23km wide. The
crater has an average depth of 600 metres.
Its spectacular setting and abundance of wildlife combine to make it a
wonder of the natural world. The
crater alone has over 20,000 large animals including some of Tanzania's last
remaining black rhino. Animals are
free to leave or enter the crater but most of them story because of the
plentiful water and food available on the crater floor throughout the year.
For the best viewing and photography approach the animals slowly and quietly
and stay on the official tracks. The
crater is about 240 km from Arusha town places to stay include crater run
campsite or lodges.
LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK;
The park is located 125 km west of Arusha town , under the wall of the
Great Rift Valley .The park is 330Km2 is covered by Lake Manyara ,It contains a
large variety of habitats such as the rift wall, the ground water forest, Acacia
woodland , areas of open grass land ,to mention but often thus being able to
support large number of species . The most famous spectacular in the park is the
-climbing lions, which are occasionally seen along branches of Acacia trees
-other animals found in this park include elephants ,leopards ,impalas ,hippos as
well as millions of prolific birds life and bandas outside the park .Hotels
tented camps and guest houses near the park also offer comfortable accomodation
and good food.
TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK;
The park covers an area of approximately 2,600km.
It lies to the South of large open grass plains of Southern maasai land,
it is about 115km from Arusha town along the Arusha - Dodoma road.
The features of Tarangire
shich correlate with the type of animals residing in the area are grassland and
flood plains. Tarangire is commonly
famous for its tree-climbing pythons, Zebras hartebeest, herds of elephants,
buffalos waterbucks, gazelles, Oryx and abundant of birdlife. There are two lodges, tented camp and several campsites in
the park.
ARUSHA
NATIONAL PARK;
The park covers an area of about 137km, it is located near Arusha town
between the peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Meru.
The park and the town derives their name from the Wa-Arusha people who
traditionally lived in this area. The
Ngurdoto crater, Momella Lakes, the highland mountain forest and the rugged
Mount Meru (about 4575m above
the sea level) are the four distinct features of the park.
The park has a wealth of wildlife including colobus monkeys, velvet
monkeys, bushbucks, buffalos, red forest duikers, hippos, elephants and
giraffes. Birds especially water
fowl is abundant and interesting. Places to stay include Momella Wildlife Lodge, park Rest House
and special campsites.
KILIMANJARO
NATIONAL PARK;
The park covers an area of 756km, it exists to preserve Mount
Kilimanjaro's outstanding scenic features and its flora and fauna.
At an altitude of 5895m above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest
mountain in Africa, the highest free standing mountain in the world and
one of the lowest volcanoes ever to burst through the earth's crust.
The base of this immense mountain measures 50km x 80km and the
outstanding features include one extinct volcano SHIRA (3962m) and two dormant
volcanoes, MAWENZI (5149m) and KIBO (5895m).
Besides the peaks & Moorland the park consists of mountain forest with relics
of old vegetation. Also
significant numbers of mammals, birds and insects inhabit the area.
Mammals include elephants, buffalos, elands, duikes, leopards, baboons,
blue monkeys and black and white colobus monkeys. The park is fragmented with colorful birds.
